IDF special forces, seeking to arrest specific terrorist suspects, mounted a raid in the early hours of this morning in the village of Naima, near Bilin, just north of Jerusalem. One of the suspects fled and was apprehended after a short chase. A second suspect managed to get away to a cave near the village where an exchange of live fire ensued between him and the Israeli soldiers. Eventually, he was killed.
Later this morning, it was announced by the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service, that the dead man is Mohammed Assi, believed to be one of the terrorists who planned that Tel Aviv bomb attack in which 29 people were injured. Assi had been in prison several times for his involvement in the terrorist activity of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and according to Ynet had been on the run since the bus attack. Ynet quotes sources in the security establishment, saying Assi was planning another attack against Israelis and refused to surrender to the forces surrounding the cave.
